Zachor – Remember on Yom Hashoah / Hazikaron
The act of remembering, while often painful, also enables us to conjure up the special memories of people we have loved and special times we have shared. National memory ensures that lessons are learned and as a result a new course of history is charted for the future. In recent history, there are two related events which fill our memories: the Holocaust and the establishment of the State of Israel. There is not an individual in our midst who has not suffered a personal loss in at least one of these arenas. We all know of and/or are related to people who perished in the Holocaust. We all have at least heard of the tens of thousands who fell in the many and ongoing wars to establish and defend the Jewish State.
Yom Hashoah, Holocaust Commemoration Day, comes on the heels of Passover to remember the victims of the Holocaust. The date was chosen as it marks the uprising of the Warsaw ghetto. Just two weeks later, on the day before we joyously celebrate Yom Ha’atzmaut, Israeli Independence Day, we solemnly recall all those who gave their life so that we may live in an independent Jewish State on Yom Hazikaron, Memorial Day.
